Sip & Shop at French Sole

So this happened one easy breezy Thursday afternoon.

A few of us were invited by Tin of ManilaFashionObserver to the opening of French Sole in Greenbelt 5. The food and drinks were divine and the shoes did not disappoint.

"French Sole first began life as a gleam of an idea when Jane Winkworth made her initial collections of bespoke ballet flats back in 1968, working with Gamba and Annello and Davide in London. Later in 1989 after a period as a trained restorer and painter of fine porcelain, Jane Winkworth started French Sole after a chance meeting with a shoe salesman from the French Hirica factory, called Philipe Cassalis.

Philipe, together with the factory he represented - who still today make the famous ballet flats that they first created back in 1950 - encouraged Jane to set up her business specialising in selling only ballet flats and loved her chosen name of French Sole.

The shoes were made using Jane's own materials, to her own designs and trimmed in the unusual contrasting colours never before seen on ballet flats and under the label of her new name - French Sole." - French Sole website

I must tell you they do not come cheap with price points of P6,000 and up. But if you have been on the look out for that perfect pair of ballet flats, then here are five reasons why these are worth your peso.

1.  They use real leather. Every pair is ultra-soft and comfortable.
2.  They have half sizes! A shout-out to all the ladies who have given up finding that perfect fitting ballet flats!
3.  As if half sizes were not enough, some pairs have adjustable ribbons. You can tighten or loosen the fit to your liking.
4.  They clean and maintain the shoes for you! How cool is that? In case you get your pair soiled, you may bring them to any French Sole branch to have them cleaned.
5.  They are just so pretty on the feet! They have a special pointy style that other ballet flats do not have.

Closet Cleanout Sale 2016

There has been so much talk on Marie Kondo's book on tidying the past weeks within my circle of friends. I guess this comes naturally after receiving tons of Christmas gifts and realizing you have no more space to store them.  So when Tin invited us to join them in a garage sale, I did not hesitate! Tidy up and sell the things that no longer 'spark joy', as Marie Kondo puts it. Who knows? They may very well spark joy for others.

Join us this Saturday, January 23, 2016, at the Corinthian Gardens Clubhouse from 8am to 1pm as we sell pre-loved, barely used and even brand new toys, clothes, and all other treasures.  Some of the sellers have posted the items that they will be selling online and people are already getting first dibs at them. Do come early and even invite  your helpers and drivers. There is definitely something for everyone!

Here are some of the items that you will find from the various sellers on that day. Search #ClosetCleanoutSale2016 on Instagram to see more.

 See you this Saturday!

10a Alabama Arts & Crafts Fair

Yesterday i found myself in an old house somewhere in Quezon City meeting local artists and appreciating art. Now i will be the first to tell you that I am not a fan of art galleries and museums. What i am a fan of is shopping. So this arts and crafts fair was a just perfect for me.
The place is a basically a bazaar for all kinds of artists. Check out the ceiling drop lights in the following pictures made from old electric fans.
For most of the booths, the creators themselves are the ones selling the items. It's fun to interview these artists and find out what inspired them to start their crafts. Some are also doing the actual craft on the spot. It's a good way to inspire or revive the inner artist in you.

Here are some of the items that caught my eye during my visit.
Aside from the novelty items, they also sell some interesting food stuff. Drink the perfect blend of local Cordillera coffee matched with Sesame Wasabe macarons. Then cap off your hot afternoon with the wild Muscovado + Bacon ice cream. A trip to 10a Alabama can be such a foodie adventure.
Here are more resurrected items. See if you can identify the former lives of the following items.
Interesting, isn't it? Watch out for the next Arts & Crafts fair by following their facebook page http://www.facebook.com/10aAlabama I was told they they hold these fairs for two days every quarter. So based on the current timeline, maybe we can expect the next fair sometime in October. Just in time for your pre-Christmas shopping.

Finally, i leave you with this very important thought.

ExpoMom 2015 #MomManifesto

Barely two months after I gave birth to Troy, I remember driving excitedly to Rockwell to attend my first ExpoMom back in 2008. That visit opened my eyes to the many unique baby products - both local and international - that are available to us these days. I remember staying there by myself for practically the entire day. It was my first day out after giving birth.

This year's ExpoMom focuses on a very important aspect of motherhood that is often neglected. The mom! We usually find ourselves too busy with the kids, our work/businesses, or errands that we forget to take care of ourselves in the process.

Aside from the booths that are selling mom-tested and mom-approved items, there will be ongoing activites onstage during the event as we journey together towards being happy and fulfilled moms.

Save the date, Moms! Invite your mom friends and join the fun next weekend from May 22 to 24 at the New Glorietta Center for the 2015 ExpoMom.

The Real Joy of Our Children

So last weekend we found ourselves in Oslob, Cebu on another family trip. We did a host of amazing things with the kids from swimming with the whalesharks to taking a dip under the breathtaking Tumalog falls.  But amidst all those fun things, one event stood out for Troy. Shopping and spending time with me.

On our last day in Cebu, we visited a mall which was right across our hotel. Everyone had their own mission so we decided to split up. Troy decided to go with me since both of us did not have any agenda.  We just walked aimlessly around the mall.  To me, it was not an extraordinary experience as I just shopped like i normally would.  Once in a while, I would ask for Troy's opinion on some products that i liked and he would ask me the same on things that he saw. We walked around chatting and laughing like good friends. As we were heading back to the hotel, Troy was smiling from ear to ear and he suddenly said "You know mom, you're not my normal mommy today". I did not know what he meant so i prodded. He further explained that i was so happy and so much fun to be with that day.  Eeps! That compliment stung a little.  We talked about it some more and i understood his heart.

I have been thinking about what Troy said ever since he said it last Sunday.  I reflected on the many times that we enjoyed things together.  How did that short shopping trip have such an impact on him?  Then I realized that I was a friend to him that day. I was not the parent who had to say "Look only but we're not buying, okay?" when he wanted to look at toys. I realized that I did not treat him like a child when i spoke to him about the things that I bought.  After one of my purchases, i even told him "I'm so happy i am finally able to buy this! I have wanted this for so long!" I did not realize it then but now that i think about it, i realize that it's something i would probably say to Dens but not really to my children.

While our kids need us to guide them since we are their parents, they also need us to be their friend. Time spent with them does not automatically make it 'Quality Time' even if we're doing things that they enjoy. Laugh with them and be silly together. Last night i played Wii with Troy and we had the time of our lives laughing at each other's wrong moves.  I did not try to make it into a teachable moment but simply had fun with him as i normally would with my friends.  I hope that i can consistently be the 'not normal mommy' for Troy.  Someone he would love to always spend time with even when we're not doing anything exciting.  And one day when he is all grown up and still loves spending time with me, that would be such an awesome reward.

Shop on Discount All the Time!

About a week ago, my beloved iPhone 4s got stolen. Yes, I know it is old and i've used up most of its tiny16gb memory but i loved it nonetheless. It has been my constant companion through long flights, sleepless nights, and has been the quickest solution to a restless toddler in the car.  So now that it's gone, i am left with no choice but to purchase a new phone.  It's time to celebrate move on.

The past days has been an endless discussion with my husband on where to purchase the currently coveted iPhone 6.  I've searched high and low, near and far for the best deal.  The constant comparison between a lower-priced unit from a semi-dubious seller vs. a higher-priced one from a legitimate source online has been a constant battle.

Last week, i was introduced to the Union Bank Platinum MasterCard that provides instant 1.5%
rebate on all of your purchases. I immediately thought of my iPhone and realized i can get it from the legitimate source online with around P600 rebate.  It's like purchasing the unit at a discount.  Not a bad deal, right?

While other card companies provide 3% to 6% rebates, they are usually limited to either gas or groceries and have a rebate limit (usually P1,000) per month.  The Union Bank card has no categories and no caps.

Imagine this. If you need to pay insurance premium of P500,000 this year, that's instantly P7,500 cash back for you.  No need to file receipts or remember to to redeem rewards before they expire. With this card, you get cash back instantly. JUST.LIKE.THAT.

This is the best card for parents like us who don't want too many rules on rewards. Earn your money back without hassle. Convinced? Call Union Bank now and apply for your own card.

To apply, LIKE https://www.facebook.com/unionbankcreditcards then send a PRIVATE message with the following information:

  • Name
  • E-mail Address
  • Mobile Number
  • Specify that they are interested in the Unionbank Cashback Mastercard

or fill in the application form online at http://unionbankph.com/personal/credit-cards/apply-now

Ps. By the way, did i tell you that the Union Bank Platinum MasterCard gives you free access to the Club Manila Lounge located at the NAIA Terminal 1? Yay to all travelers. This alone could have won me over!

Melissa for My Little Girl

I have a confession to make. I am a Melissa addict.

I am not really one to hoard designer bags or find the need to always buy the latest trend in fashion, but when it comes to Melissa shoes, my will power seems to go away just like that. Through the years, i have accumulated almost 20 pairs of Melissa shoes. Most of them from the Vivienne Westwood collection.
A portion of my shoe cabinet

My first Melissa is this green pair which i bought back in 2008. It looks almost as new as the day i bought them! And mind you i wear my Melissa shoes all the time. I wear them to work on a daily basis and to church on weekends. So it's not like they're rarely worn. What i like about Melissa is that it retains its shape and can be washed and cleaned after each use. They're very comfortable too!
Vivienne Westwood Lady Dragon collection

So when i had my baby girl in 2011, one of my friends who knew me well gave her a pair of Mini Melissa. I was ecstatic! I did not even realize then that they had Melissa for kids! Oh, the joy! I have tried buying other less expensive shoes for my daughter but they often just get broken soon after. Melissa shoes may be a bit more pricey but it's worth every penny. It's stylish and long lasting. No need to keep on buying a new pair of shoes ever so often.

So a few weeks ago, my daughter and i were invited to the launch of Mini Melissa's animal line. Each pair is just as adorable as the next.

Doesn't she look like Toothless in How to Train Your Dragon? Adorable!

This was my daughter's first pair but in another color. So cute and dainty!

Rhino boots! Who doesn't like boots?

White Rabbit, anyone?

Perfect with that sweet summer dress

Mini ballet - coming out in December! Watch out for it!

Cuteness overload! Gingerbread cookie for the holidays!

All little girl loves teddy bears!

Baby Melissa! Perfect for that new baby girl inaanak!
All of the above Mini Melissa pairs come in a variety of colors. It's time to grab a pair (or two) for your precious little girls' tiny feet!

Mini Melissa Shoes are available at Geleia (Alabang Town Center, TriNoma, Mall of Asia, Shangri-la, SM Aura, Greenbelt 5, Magnolia, Megamall), Rustans (Makati, Shangri-la, Alabang Town Center), Mothercare (Greenbelt 5, Glorietta 4, BGC Active Fun, Magnolia, Shangri-la, Eastwood, TriNoma), Flatshop (Eastwood and Greenhills), Selected Shoe Salon stores, Shoe Thing (Highstreet, Greenbelt 5, TriNoma, Eastwood, Lucky Chinatown).
